with a 3mtr flexishaft the light output was not enough for a 900x550 to light up a kitchen that is 6mtrs X 4mtrs.

the existing ceiling surround and prismatic diffuser was outdated

even though this size velux is 1200x1200 (throat 1140x1180) we installed it over a truss so in theory it was taking up 2 truss spacings

with it’s 3mtr shaft and services in the way this was a job in a half to frame from roof to ceiling so the plasterer could be hung. our plasterer also had to “wrap” the centre truss so that it would blend in with the whole skylight.

after the framing we needed to install custom scaffolding under the skylight but over the kitchen bench. we had to ensure the kitchen bench was not to be damaged and the scaffold was safe enough to work off.

coming towards the end of the project. adding the final touches. what a difference with the skylight opened up to a much larger opening at ceiling level.

the final product. all in all this turned out great and the customer loved the amount of light they were now getting in their kitchen.

Because of the plaster sheet sizes we needed 2 installers inside the skylight shaft and another 1 to pass the sheets up to them. we also needed to install steel planks on top of the trusses so we could work safely.

time deprived as the home owners were moving in and we were given the job with only a couple of days to complete it. our installer hung drop sheets around the skylight shaft to ensure there was minimal dust spread throughout the room, taking all due care for health and safety.

modern skylights were also contracted to paint the shaft. this proved a mission also due to the shaft being 3mtrs long. the new size of the skylight opening at ceiling level was approximately 2mtrs x 1.2mtrs. what a big difference going from a 900X550 skylight to one more than double the size…..let there be light!
